Overcoming Self-Doubt: Embracing Your Power and Potential
Jan 09, 2025Have you ever accomplished something amazing, only to feel like it wasn’t enough? Maybe you’ve been praised for your skills or talents but couldn’t shake the feeling that someone made a mistake in believing in you. You’re not alone—this feeling has a name: self-doubt. And it’s something most of us face, even the most accomplished women you admire.
For years, I struggled with self-doubt. On the outside, I seemed successful—working hard, achieving goals, and living up to expectations. But on the inside, I felt like an imposter, always worried that someone would see through me. That nagging voice in my head told me I wasn’t good enough, that I didn’t belong, and that I was somehow falling short.
Understanding the Roots of Self-Doubt
Self-doubt doesn’t come out of nowhere. It’s often the result of:
-
Cultural and societal expectations: As women, especially Black women, we’re often held to impossible standards of perfection.
-
Past experiences: Criticism, failures, or a lack of encouragement can plant seeds of doubt early in life.
-
Comparison: It’s easy to feel inadequate when scrolling through curated images of other people’s highlight reels.
When self-doubt takes root, it holds us back. It keeps us from applying for that dream job, starting that business, or even speaking up in meetings. It can make us shrink ourselves, dimming the light we’re meant to shine.
Learning to Talk Back to Self-Doubt
The good news? Self-doubt isn’t a permanent state. Here are three strategies I’ve used to quiet that inner critic:
-
Challenge the Narrative: When self-doubt whispers lies like, “You’re not good enough,” ask yourself, “Is this really true?” Most often, you’ll find there’s no evidence to back up that claim.
-
Celebrate Small Wins: Every time you achieve something, no matter how small, take a moment to celebrate it. Self-doubt thrives in an environment of unacknowledged success.
-
Surround Yourself with Support: Find a community of people who believe in you, even when you’re struggling to believe in yourself. Sometimes, seeing yourself through someone else’s eyes is the reminder you need of your worth.
Finding Balance in Self-Doubt
I’m not here to tell you that self-doubt magically disappears. There are still days when I hear that voice questioning my abilities. But the difference now is that I don’t let it control me. I’ve learned to recognize self-doubt as a sign that I’m growing and stepping into new territory—and that’s a good thing.
Every time I face self-doubt and push through it, I prove to myself that I’m capable, strong, and worthy. And so are you.
A Call to Action
If you’ve been battling self-doubt, I encourage you to take one small step today. Journal about a recent success, reach out to a supportive friend, or simply remind yourself that your feelings are valid but not facts.
You are more than your self-doubt. You are a force, a light, and a balanced woman in the making. Let’s continue this journey together.
