Let’s Talk About Balance: Finding Your Rhythm as a Balanced Woman
Dec 07, 2024Hey Love, Let’s Get Real About Balance
Balance isn’t about doing everything perfectly or giving every part of your life the same energy. That’s a myth. Balance is about knowing what matters most to you and showing up for those areas in a way that feels right for your season of life.
I know some folks will tell you that balance is a false goal, especially for Black women. They think it means spreading yourself thin, trying to do it all. But I’m here to tell you—it doesn’t. Balance is about aligning your energy with what makes you feel whole.
Start with the Dimensions of Vitality for a Balanced Woman
There are six key dimensions to living a vibrant, intentional life. I call them the pillars of the Be the Balanced Woman philosophy—your guide to thriving:
-
The Foundation (Physical Vitality):
Your body is your home. Are you giving it the care, nourishment, and rest it deserves to keep you grounded in strength? -
The Heartbeat (Emotional Flow):
Your feelings are valid. Are you honoring them, protecting your peace, and moving through life with emotional rhythm and grace? -
The Soul Connection (Spiritual Harmony):
Your soul craves alignment. How are you centering yourself in purpose and connecting with what gives your life deeper meaning? -
The Circle (Relational Energy):
Your relationships matter. Are you nurturing your village, protecting your energy, and building connections that empower and sustain you? -
The Growth Zone (Mental Expansion):
Your mind is powerful. What’s fueling your curiosity, inspiring you to learn, and challenging you to grow right now? -
The Hustle & Flow (Aligned Ambition):
Your work is a reflection of your values. Does your hustle align with your vision of success, and is your ambition in harmony with your life’s purpose?
Balance isn’t about giving equal effort to all these areas—it’s about recognizing which dimension needs your energy and focus in this moment. By tuning into these dimensions of vitality, you can align with your rhythm and live life on your terms.
Balance Ain’t About Equal Effort
Let me say this loud and clear: balance is not about equal effort. It’s about being intentional.
Picture this—when you’re juggling life, some balls are rubber, and some are glass. The glass ones are the areas that matter most to you. If you drop them, they’ll shatter. But the rubber ones? They’ll bounce back. Your job is to figure out which ones are glass for you.
How to Find Your Rhythm
As Black women, we carry so much—expectations, responsibilities, and the weight of being everything to everyone. That’s why balance starts with what truly matters to you.
Take a moment, sis. Write down the top five things that light up your life—your core values. These are your compass, your guiding stars. Let them shape how you show up in each dimension of vitality.
Here’s how it might look:
-
If The Foundation (Physical Vitality) needs care, start small. Lace up your sneakers for a 10-minute walk or hydrate like your glow depends on it—because it does.
-
If The Circle (Relational Energy) feels strained, pour love into your connections. Reach out to a friend who lifts your spirit or gently release someone who drains it.
Balance isn’t about ticking every box or meeting every demand. It’s about pouring your energy where it counts—where it aligns with you, not where the world says it should go.
Challenge the False Narratives
Some folks might tell you that chasing balance is a waste of time. They’ll say, “Black women have too much on their plates to even think about balance.” But here’s the truth: when we redefine balance, we reclaim our power.
Balance isn’t about being everything to everyone—it’s about showing up for yourself. It’s about saying, “I deserve to thrive, not just survive.”
A Quick Activity for You
Let’s keep this simple and impactful. Grab a pen and paper, sis:
- Write down the six Be the Balanced Woman Dimensions of Vitality.
- Score each one from 1-10 based on how much love and attention it’s getting from you right now.
- Find the dimension with the lowest score and ask yourself, “What’s one small step I can take this week to pour into this area?”
Start small. Maybe it’s journaling your emotions for The Heartbeat (Emotional Flow) or spending 5 minutes in stillness to align with The Soul Connection (Spiritual Harmony). Remember, small, intentional shifts create big, lasting change. You’ve got this! đź’›
Community Is Key, Sis
You don’t have to figure this out alone. Lean on your sisters, your mentors, your tribe. Find people who remind you that you’re not just worthy—you’re enough, exactly as you are.
And here’s a little something extra: What does balance mean to you? Drop a comment or share your story. We’re all learning from each other here.
Final Thought
Balance isn’t about perfection, and it’s not a finish line. It’s a practice. Some days, you’ll get it right. Other days, you’ll feel like the scale is tipped too far in one direction. That’s life, love.
But when you center yourself—your values, your needs—you’ll find your rhythm. And in that rhythm, you’ll discover your wholeness.
Now go out there and be the balanced woman you’re meant to be. I’m cheering for you.
